Mute users

Mute accounts you don't want to see on Ecency, understand community mutes and learn how muting differs from chat privacy settings.

Muting lets you hide an account’s posts and comments from your own view on Ecency. It is different from a community mute, which moderators use to hide content inside their community. This page explains both.

  • Web: open the person’s profile and click Mute next to the follow button.
  • Mobile: open the person’s profile and tap MUTE / BLOCK, or use Mute / Block in the menu of one of their posts.

A mute is saved on the Hive blockchain as part of your follow list. Keep in mind:

  • It is public. Anyone can see which accounts you have muted.
  • It works across Hive. Other Hive apps that respect mutes hide the account too.
  • It replaces a follow. Hive keeps one relationship per account, so muting someone also unfollows them. Following a muted account unmutes it.
  • It needs a transaction. Like following, muting is signed with your posting authority and uses a small amount of Resource Credits.

Because a mute is public, the other person may find out. Ecency can show them a notification that you muted them, in the same way it shows new followers. They can still see and reply to your content: muting only changes what you see.

Once you mute an account, Ecency hides its content for you:

  • Feeds: their posts are removed from your feeds and lists, as if they weren’t there.
  • Comments: their comments are collapsed. On the web, a collapsed comment is marked Muted author and you can click it to reveal the comment. In the mobile app, tap Muted! Tap To Reveal.
  • Waves: their waves are replaced with a Muted author’s post placeholder.
  • Their profile: you see a notice, You muted @name, explaining that their posts and comments are hidden from you.

Because muting is read from the blockchain after the page loads, a muted author’s post may appear for a moment before it disappears.

Ecency doesn’t have a separate page listing everyone you muted. To unmute someone, open their profile and click Unmute (web) or tap UNMUTE / UNBLOCK (mobile). Their content shows up again right away.

Communities have their own moderation, separate from your personal mutes.

  • Muting a post: community moderators (and admins and owners) can open the ⋮ menu on a post in their community and choose Mute. They can add Notes explaining the decision. Unmute restores the post.
  • Muted role: moderators can give an account the Muted role in their community. New posts from that account in the community are muted automatically.

A post muted by a community is not deleted from Hive. On the web, readers see a warning that the content was muted by the community’s moderators for not following community guidelines. They can choose to reveal it. In the mobile app the post shows Content muted for community guidelines violation with Tap to reveal.

See Moderate a community for the moderator side.

Hive hides some content from normal feeds, for example posts from accounts with a very low reputation. The Muted option in the feed menu (at ecency.com/muted) shows these posts so you can review them. It is not a list of the accounts you muted.

A Hive mute hides posts and comments. It is not a chat block. To control who can message you in Chats, use the Chat Privacy setting:

  • Everyone
  • Only people I follow
  • No one (disable DMs)

Since muting someone also unfollows them, choosing Only people I follow stops accounts you muted from starting a DM with you. Inside chats, Mute channel only silences alerts from that conversation. It doesn’t hide the other person.
