Moderate a community

How to run a Hive community on Ecency, from team roles and settings to pinning, muting and community rewards.

Once your community exists, you run it from its page on Ecency. This guide covers the team roles, the settings, the day-to-day moderation tools and the Ecency community rewards program. If you haven’t created a community yet, start with Create a community.

Roles, settings, pins and mutes are stored on the Hive blockchain, so other community-aware Hive apps see them too.

Every account in a community has one role. Ecency shows this summary when you assign a role:

Role What it can do
Owner (the community account, hive-xxxxxx) Assign admins
Admin Edit settings, assign mods
Moderator Mute, pin, set user titles
Member Listed on the leadership team
Guest The default; can post and comment
Muted New posts are automatically muted

You can only assign roles below your own. An owner can set admin, mod, member, guest or muted. An admin can set mod, member, guest or muted. A moderator can set member, guest or muted.

  1. OwnerAssigns admins
  2. AdminEdit settings, assign mods
  3. ModeratorMute, pin, set user titles
  4. MemberListed on the leadership team
  5. GuestThe default; can post and comment
  6. MutedNew posts are automatically muted
Community roles from the most power to the least. You can only assign roles below your own.

The community type also matters. In a Topic community anyone can post or comment. In a Journal only members can post. Guests can only comment. In a Council only members can post or comment. Muted accounts can’t post or comment in any type.

  1. Open your community page and click Edit roles in the sidebar card. This opens the User Roles page (ecency.com/roles/hive-xxxxxx).
  2. Click Add User, or click an existing role in the list to change it.
  3. In Set user role, enter the Username and pick the Role.
  4. Confirm and sign the transaction.

On the mobile app, open the community’s members screen. You can change the role of members whose current role is below yours.

Owners and admins see Edit settings on the community card. The Community Settings dialog has:

  • Title: 3 to 20 characters, required.
  • About: a short tagline, required.
  • Language: required.
  • Description: the longer text shown in the sidebar.
  • Rules: one rule per line.
  • NSFW: Yes or No. NSFW communities are marked on their card.
  • Default beneficiary: a Hive username and a reward percentage (1 to 100). This one is stored on the community account itself, so you can only change it while you are logged in as the community account (the owner). Learn more in Custom beneficiary.

The mobile app has the same settings screen (title, about, language, description, rules and “Not safe for work”), available to the owner and admins.

Owners, admins and moderators can pin posts to the top of the community feed.

  1. Open the post’s menu (the three dots).
  2. Choose Pin to community. To remove it later, choose Unpin from community.

Muting hides a post from the community’s normal feeds. Muted posts are still listed under the community’s Muted tab.

  1. Open the post’s menu and choose Mute.
  2. In the Mute post/comment dialog, add a note explaining your decision, then confirm.
  3. To reverse it, choose Unmute and add a note.

Owners, admins and moderators can also mute comments from the discussion under a post.

To stop an account from posting in your community, set their role to muted on the User Roles page. Their new posts are muted automatically. Set them back to guest to lift it.

The community menu has two extra pages:

  • Members (ecency.com/subscribers/hive-xxxxxx) lists everyone who joined.
  • Activities (ecency.com/activities/hive-xxxxxx) shows the community account’s recent activity feed, such as new subscribers and role changes.

Ecency runs a community rewards program that pays Ecency Points to registered communities when their members publish posts with Ecency apps. See Ecency Points.

To register:

  1. Log in as the community account itself (the hive-xxxxxx account, using its own keys). Only the owner role sees the Community Rewards button on the community card. If you created the community on Ecency, your personal account is an admin, so it won’t see this button.
  2. Click Community Rewards, then Register.
  3. Sign the transaction with your active key.

Requirements:

  • The community needs at least 100 subscribers. Below that you’ll see “Minimum 100 subscribers required to register.”
  • Registration is one time. If the community is already registered, Ecency tells you so.
